New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung are in discussions about a potential visit by Mamdani to Jakarta, though no official confirmation has been made. This follows their meeting in New York last month, where they addressed shared urban challenges during the U20 Mayors Summit 2026. The visit, if finalized, could coincide with a conference in late October, but talks are still in the preliminary stages.
During their meeting, Mamdani expressed interest in Jakarta’s strategies to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance public transportation. Governor Pramono highlighted Jakarta’s ongoing development of Transjabodetabek, a comprehensive regional transportation network that aims to connect the capital with surrounding areas.
Additionally, the leaders discussed municipal financing strategies. Governor Pramono presented Jakarta’s initiative to issue municipal bonds, termed Jakarta Bonds, intended to fund infrastructure and development projects. In response, Mayor Mamdani proposed facilitating cooperation between the finance teams of New York and Jakarta to share expertise on municipal bond issuance.
The dialogue between the two cities underscores a mutual interest in learning from each other’s experiences and finding collaborative solutions to common urban issues such as transportation, congestion, and financing for development projects.
