In a significant move towards enhancing international artificial intelligence collaboration, Indonesia has officially joined the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO) as a founding member. This development came to light following discussions between Indonesia’s Coordinating Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Minister Hartarto emphasized Indonesia’s dedication to establishing an AI governance framework that prioritizes equitable development and human-centered innovation, while also respecting national sovereignty and adhering to United Nations principles.
Indonesia has shown eagerness to take on a leadership role within WAICO by proposing to secure a senior position in the organization’s secretariat. Additionally, the country is looking to bolster its partnership with China, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence, investment, and trade. As part of this strategy, Minister Hartarto has called for expedited market access for Indonesian exports and encouraged Chinese companies to increase their investments in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, the digital economy, and industrial parks.
The discussions further highlighted Indonesia’s support for China’s upcoming role as the chair of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in 2026. Minister Hartarto expressed a desire to deepen economic ties through a bilateral business summit, which may coincide with a planned meeting between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Chinese President Xi Jinping. This proposed summit aims to explore new avenues for economic cooperation between the two nations.
By joining WAICO and seeking enhanced collaboration with China, Indonesia is positioning itself as a proactive player in the global AI landscape.
