Malaysia is set to address the ongoing issue of Myanmar refugees within its borders, focusing on national security and Malaysian interests, according to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. This initiative involves the voluntary and phased repatriation of refugees to Myanmar, a process being coordinated between the two countries.
In recent discussions, Malaysia and Myanmar agreed to the staged repatriation of 5,000 refugees, with the first phase involving 1,476 individuals who have already begun the process. This approach aims to alleviate the strain that the refugee situation has placed on Malaysia’s security, social services, and administrative systems.
Prime Minister Anwar emphasized the significance of balancing national laws with humanitarian considerations in addressing this longstanding challenge.
