Vietnam and Malaysia are set on enhancing their defence cooperation, aiming to bolster bilateral relations and contribute to regional stability. This development was underscored during discussions in Hanoi between Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, General Phan Văn Giang, and Malaysia’s outgoing Ambassador, Dato’ Tan Yang Thai. During their meeting, General Giang commended the ambassador for his role in fostering improved cooperation between the two nations.
General Giang noted the advancements in defence relations, which have seen increased regular military exchanges, policy dialogues, and training cooperation. The collaboration has extended to coordination at international and multilateral events, reflecting a growing partnership between the two countries. The Vietnamese defence chief emphasized the importance of continuing the implementation of existing agreements and called for stronger engagement through high-level meetings and established defence cooperation mechanisms.
In a gesture to further solidify these ties, General Giang extended an invitation to Malaysia’s defence leaders and companies to attend the Vietnam International Defence Expo 2026, scheduled to take place in Hanoi. This invitation underscores Vietnam’s commitment to engaging with Malaysia in a broader defence context, providing a platform for further collaboration and interaction.
Ambassador Tan Yang Thai expressed his gratitude towards Vietnam’s defence ministry and military for their support throughout his term. He conveyed his optimism for the continued growth of defence ties, highlighting their significance in promoting peace and prosperity in the region.
