Thailand Urges Cambodia: Avoid Using Tech to Escalate Border Dispute

by admin477351

Efforts to improve diplomatic relations between Thailand and Cambodia face potential setbacks if disputes over their shared border continue to be highlighted on international stages, according to Thailand. Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow emphasized that persistent allegations against Thailand raised during global forums could hinder trust-building initiatives with Cambodia.

This warning comes in response to remarks made by Cambodia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Keo Chhea, at a UN Security Council meeting. During the meeting, Chhea highlighted the humanitarian impact of previous border skirmishes between the two nations. Cambodia pointed out that these conflicts resulted in significant civilian displacement, destruction of homes and infrastructure, and inflicted damage on the Preah Vihear Temple, a site recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Thailand has criticized Cambodia’s statements as being one-sided, arguing that they contradict the spirit of a joint agreement reached in late 2025. This agreement was designed to foster reconciliation and restore confidence between the two countries.

In contrast, Cambodian government spokesperson Pen Bona affirmed Cambodia’s commitment to peaceful dialogue and adherence to international law and existing ceasefire agreements as means to address the ongoing border issues. These long-standing border tensions, particularly concerning areas near the Preah Vihear Temple, have periodically strained the bilateral relations between Thailand and Cambodia.
