Russia has recalled its ambassador to the United Kingdom, Andrey Kelin, after a seven-year tenure, amid escalating tensions over Britain’s backing of Ukraine. The Russian embassy confirmed that Kelin’s diplomatic mission concluded on July 21, but has yet to name a successor. Currently, Vasily A. Tsyganov, the embassy’s chargé d’affaires, is the highest-ranking Russian diplomat on British soil.
This diplomatic shift occurs as friction intensifies over the UK’s military assistance to Ukraine. Moscow recently issued a warning to Britain about potential “consequences” following revelations that British-made attack drones were reportedly supplied to Ukraine for operations against Russian targets. The Kremlin has accused London of adopting an aggressive stance, while the British government maintains its commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defense against the ongoing Russian invasion.
The departure of Kelin has prompted speculation about Moscow’s intentions regarding its diplomatic relations with Britain. Despite this, the Russian embassy has stated that the withdrawal should not be seen as an indication of a formal downgrading of diplomatic ties. The embassy’s assurance suggests that, for now, there is no immediate plan to alter the level of diplomatic engagement between the two nations.
