Malaysia is setting its sights on achieving a total of 33 medals at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, which will take place from September 19 to October 4. The ambitious target includes six gold, seven silver, and 20 bronze medals. According to Malaysia’s Chef de Mission Mohd Sumali Reduan, these goals are considered attainable, reflecting the athletes’ current form, their recent performances, and their potential to secure medals amidst strong competition throughout Asia.
A total of thirteen sports have been pinpointed for their medal-winning potential for Malaysia. Among these are track cycling, badminton, archery, diving, and squash, as well as sepak takraw, hockey, athletics, sailing, karate, wushu, esports, and shooting. This strategic focus underscores the country’s comprehensive approach to maximizing its medal tally at the Games.
The Malaysian contingent will be composed of 352 athletes and 185 officials, who will compete across 30 of the 43 sports offered at the event. They are set to participate in 156 out of 469 events, showcasing the country’s broad involvement and commitment to the Games. Notably, wushu athlete Tan Cheong Min has been chosen as the flag-bearer for Malaysia, an honor that highlights her standing within the team. Meanwhile, track cycling athlete Azizulhasni Awang is also expected to make significant contributions to Malaysia’s medal quest.
In addition to the primary Games, Malaysia is also preparing for the Asian Para Games, scheduled from October 18 to 24. The Para Games contingent is aiming for a commendable haul of six gold, 10 silver, and 18 bronze medals. This dual focus on both sets of Games reflects Malaysia’s dedication to excelling across diverse sporting disciplines and supporting athletes of all abilities on the international stage.
