Iran has leveled accusations against Qatar, claiming the Gulf state is hindering efforts to uncover the whereabouts of three Iranian pilots that Tehran asserts went missing during a recent conflict. Qatar, on its part, has firmly denied these claims and rejected any suggestion that it is detaining the pilots.
Mohammad Bagherzadeh, an official with the Iranian armed forces, reported that a team of Iranian Air Force experts has been awaiting authorization to travel to Qatar for months to investigate the situation. He appealed to Doha to permit the team’s visit and urged the International Committee of the Red Cross to monitor the developments closely.
Previously, Iran announced it had retrieved the body of pilot Majid Kazemi, who fell during an incident involving the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base situated in Qatar. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, Majed al-Ansari, categorically refuted the allegations that Iranian pilots are being held against their will. He explained that Qatar had engaged with the pilots after they reportedly breached Qatari airspace and took defensive actions when they failed to respond to communication attempts.
Qatar has indicated that its search and rescue teams were actively involved in efforts to locate the pilots and any remains. The country also mentioned it had coordinated with Iran regarding the transfer of the recovered remains of one pilot. Additionally, Doha highlighted that in April, Iranian authorities were invited to send a delegation to Qatar to receive updates on the search and rescue operations, yet there was no subsequent response from Tehran.
This dispute occurs amid ongoing tensions between Iran, the United States, and other regional players following the conflict that erupted earlier this year. Qatar has been playing a significant diplomatic role, aiming to ease tensions and facilitate dialogue between the involved parties.
