Indonesia has embarked on a significant national energy initiative with the launch of the Masela LNG Project, a strategic venture valued at $20.95 billion, or Rp 390 trillion. This monumental project is anticipated to substantially boost the nation’s economy by generating over $44 billion in state revenue throughout its operational life, thanks to direct and indirect tax contributions.
Once completed, the project is set to enhance Indonesia’s energy output by producing 9.5 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually, alongside 35,000 barrels of condensate each day. This substantial increase in production capacity is expected to fortify the country’s standing in the energy sector significantly.
The construction phase of the Masela LNG Project is projected to create approximately 12,000 jobs, providing a considerable boost to employment in the region. Upon completion, the facility will offer between 800 to 1,000 permanent jobs. The Indonesian government has highlighted its commitment to prioritizing the hiring of qualified local residents from the Tanimbar Islands and the broader Maluku region, ensuring that the local workforce benefits directly from this development.
Situated in the Arafura Sea, about 150 kilometers south of Masela Island, the project is poised to drive economic growth in the region. It aims to enhance the welfare of local communities while simultaneously increasing the national energy output, marking a significant step forward in Indonesia’s economic and energy development strategy.
