Renowned Canadian actor Peter Cullen, celebrated for his iconic voice roles as Optimus Prime in the Transformers franchise and Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh, has passed away at 85. Cullen died on Wednesday at his Los Angeles home, with his family by his side, according to a statement released by his family.

Originating from Montreal, Cullen launched his career in Canadian television and radio before rising to prominence as one of the entertainment industry’s most recognizable voice talents. His portrayal of Optimus Prime began with the 1984 animated television series Transformers and continued through seven major Hollywood films from 2007 to 2023, along with various spin-offs. Cullen also lent his voice to the beloved character Eeyore, the perpetually gloomy donkey from the Winnie the Pooh series, appearing in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and several subsequent TV shows, films, and video games.

Beyond these roles, Cullen’s voice was key in bringing to life other notable characters. He voiced KARR, the sinister counterpart to KITT, in the popular series Knight Rider. His contribution to the 1987 action film Predator involved creating the iconic clicking sounds of the alien creature, and he also gave voice to King Kong in the 1976 film remake.

Cullen often credited his older brother Larry, a former U.S. Marine Corps captain, for influencing the characterization of Optimus Prime. His brother’s guidance led him to craft a persona that embodied genuine heroism—strength without aggression. Cullen’s portrayal of Optimus Prime earned him a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2011, cementing his legacy within the industry. In recognition of his extensive contributions, he received a lifetime achievement award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in 2023.

Spanning decades, Cullen’s career left a lasting imprint on popular culture through his distinct voice work, which became synonymous with some of the most enduring animated and science fiction characters. His contributions to the field have ensured his place in the annals of entertainment history.
