Indonesian Stock Market Recovers 1.7% Amid New Regulations and Investor Caution

by admin477351

Indonesian stocks made a notable rebound on Tuesday, climbing 1.7% and lifting the Jakarta Composite Index back over the 5,000 mark after a three-day decline had previously pushed it below 4,900. This recovery reflects investor reactions to recent regulatory changes and ongoing concerns about a potential downgrading by MSCI to standalone market status.

The index surged by approximately 88 points in the early hours of trading as investors evaluated measures introduced by the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) aimed at enhancing market transparency. Among these measures was the reduction of the lower trading limit for stocks from 15% to 7%, a move intended to temper sharp price drops. Despite the day’s gains, market volatility continued to be a concern, with more stocks declining than advancing in the morning session.

In addition to adjusting trading limits, the IDX proposed changes targeting stocks with highly concentrated share ownership, aiming to bolster market integrity and align with international standards. Nevertheless, these changes do not assure a positive outcome from MSCI’s assessment.

Analysts caution that the Jakarta Composite Index could encounter further pressure if large-cap stocks continue to be sold off. They pinpointed the 4,800–4,900 range as a potential support level, emphasizing that a recovery in major stocks is crucial for maintaining the index above 5,000.

Furthermore, alterations to the index’s composition may enhance the influence of major banking stocks, thereby making their performance and foreign investment inflows increasingly significant for the broader market’s dynamics.

Meanwhile, the global market presented a mixed picture. Technology stocks began showing signs of recovery as investors selectively navigated the artificial intelligence sector. Additionally, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East sustained elevated oil prices, adding to the complex landscape of global market sentiment.
