Malaysia’s efforts to bolster economic ties with China are set to receive a significant boost as Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim engages in a strategic visit to the country. With China being Malaysia’s top trading partner for 17 consecutive years, this three-day working visit aims to deepen collaboration in trade and emerging technologies, potentially increasing foreign investment opportunities in Malaysia.
Arriving in Shanghai on Tuesday, Anwar, who also serves as Malaysia’s finance minister, is focusing on strengthening bilateral relations through high-level meetings and participation in key international events. His itinerary includes a crucial meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Hangzhou, scheduled for Thursday, where discussions are expected to center around enhancing economic cooperation.
During his visit, Anwar will address the WorldSkills Conference in Shanghai, coinciding with the WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 event, showcasing Malaysia’s commitment to skills development and innovation. He will also attend the Fifth Global Digital Trade Expo in Hangzhou, where Malaysia is recognized as one of the Guest Countries of Honour, reflecting its growing influence in digital trade.
Anwar’s agenda emphasizes the importance of artificial intelligence and digital trade, aligning with Malaysia’s broader strategy to attract Chinese business and technology leaders to invest in the country. This focus on innovation and international cooperation underscores the potential for increased Malaysian access to Chinese markets and technology sectors.
The economic relationship between Malaysia and China remains robust, with bilateral trade reaching an impressive US$113.82 billion from January to August this year. This visit not only underscores the enduring partnership between the two nations but also highlights Malaysia’s proactive steps in securing its economic future amidst a rapidly evolving global landscape.
