On September 5, Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing convened in Hà Nội, marking an important step forward in the diplomatic relations between the two nations. Prime Minister Hưng warmly received President Min Aung Hlaing, who was visiting Vietnam for the first time in his new capacity. The discussions underscored a mutual commitment to enhancing bilateral ties and expanding cooperation in various sectors, with Vietnam offering its support for Myanmar’s journey toward stability, reconciliation, dialogue, and economic growth.
During the meeting, President Min Aung Hlaing lauded Vietnam’s socio-economic successes and its increasing influence in both regional and international arenas. He expressed a keen interest in learning from Vietnam’s development strategies. The Myanmar president also conveyed his nation’s dedication to nurturing the longstanding friendship and broad cooperation shared with Vietnam. Both leaders acknowledged the recent advancements in their bilateral relations, agreeing on the need for more high-level exchanges to build political trust and rejuvenate essential cooperation mechanisms in areas such as trade, security, and defense.
Defense and security emerged as a central focus, with both countries planning to bolster their collaborative efforts against cross-border crime, cybercrime, online fraud, and drug trafficking. They also aim to enhance military training initiatives and young officer exchange programs, while addressing non-traditional security challenges. Economic cooperation was another crucial topic of discussion, as the leaders explored avenues to boost trade and modernize existing trade, investment, and customs agreements. Myanmar extended an invitation to Vietnamese businesses to invest in sectors like telecommunications, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, aquaculture, food processing, irrigation, and infrastructure.
The two leaders also deliberated on the potential for improving infrastructure and air connectivity, including the possibility of restoring direct flights. They discussed developing joint tourism initiatives, focusing on spiritual and medical tourism. On the international stage, Vietnam reiterated its commitment to collaborating with ASEAN members to foster dialogue and constructive engagement with Myanmar. Both nations emphasized their support for resolving disputes peacefully, in line with international law.
In a gesture of continued diplomatic engagement, Prime Minister Hưng invited President Min Aung Hlaing to attend the CLMV Summit and chair the ACMECS Summit scheduled for November 2026 in Hà Nội. In turn, the Myanmar president extended an invitation to Prime Minister Hưng to visit Myanmar at a mutually convenient time, further solidifying the deepening ties between the two countries.
