President Donald Trump’s optimism is soaring ahead of his “big meeting” with Chinese President Xi Jinping, despite a fresh outbreak of trade hostilities.
“I think it’s going to work out very well, actually,” Trump said from Tokyo. He confirmed the meeting is set for Thursday in South Korea, during the APEC summit.
The positive forecast comes as the US threatens 100% tariffs on Chinese goods from November 1. This was a response to China’s new controls on rare earth mineral exports.
This new flare-up has ended a recent truce and includes other measures like US port fees and Chinese countermeasures.
Trump, however, was undeterred. “We are gonna be (having) a fantastic meeting,” he said, adding it would be “great for everybody.”
