Budget airline EasyJet has criticized European Union baggage proposals for failing to recognize the diverse preferences and priorities among air travelers.
The legislative push to mandate free cabin baggage has secured parliamentary approval across European institutions. Regulations would require airlines to provide allowances for both personal items and larger carry-on bags to all passengers regardless of individual preferences.
The airline’s leadership emphasizes that passengers have genuinely different priorities. Some value ultra-low fares above all else and prefer to travel light, while others prioritize convenience and are willing to pay for additional services like baggage allowances.
Current market-based systems accommodate this diversity by allowing passengers to customize purchases. Regulatory mandates would eliminate this flexibility, imposing standardized solutions that may not align with many passengers’ actual preferences.
EasyJet also highlights substantial financial implications. Ancillary revenues including baggage fees help maintain competitive pricing structures. The airline reported quarterly losses of £93 million while seeing encouraging trends in booking volumes and route diversification.
