Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia has called on citizens from Johor who are living and working in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore to return and participate in the upcoming state election on July 11. Emphasizing the significance of each vote, Anwar addressed attendees in Kulai, Johor, urging young voters and those working abroad to ensure their voices are heard. He clarified that while the results of the state election would not impact his role as Prime Minister, they would be crucial in shaping Johor’s local governance.
During his speech, Anwar outlined the distinct responsibilities of federal and state governments. He assured that the federal government would maintain oversight over substantial infrastructure projects, such as the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone and the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link. Meanwhile, he encouraged state authorities to prioritize local matters, including public housing maintenance, support for small businesses, and community services.
The Prime Minister highlighted successful public housing initiatives in other Malaysian states, achieved through collaboration with the Housing and Local Government Ministry. He urged Johor to enhance its local governance efforts in similar ways. By drawing on these examples, Anwar suggested that Johor could achieve significant improvements in public housing and other local services.
Furthermore, Anwar contrasted the welfare distribution systems of the federal and Johor state governments. He pointed out that federal financial assistance is provided directly to beneficiaries, eliminating the need for individuals to queue in person. He also mentioned plans to extend federal welfare assistance in the future, though he did not elaborate on the specifics.
