American Rice Farmers Find White House Ally in Import Battle

by admin477351

American rice farmers found a White House ally during a Monday meeting where President Trump promised tariff protection against foreign competition. Industry representative Meryl Kennedy successfully conveyed producer concerns directly to the president.

Kennedy, who founded Kennedy Rice Mills and 4 Sisters Rice, explained to Trump how imports from India, Thailand, and China have created unsustainable market conditions. She detailed how foreign rice priced below domestic costs threatens American farming operations.

Trump responded by questioning why current trade arrangements permit such competition. The president asked his treasury secretary whether India benefits from special exemptions that allow market access despite dumping concerns.

When Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent mentioned ongoing trade negotiations, Trump dismissed this as insufficient protection for American farmers. The president promised immediate enforcement action, demonstrating his responsiveness to domestic agricultural concerns.

Trump also indicated support for restrictions on Canadian fertilizer to help American producers. The president’s promises reflect his commitment to protecting agricultural constituencies through aggressive trade enforcement.
