KUALA LUMPUR — Vietnam’s National Assembly Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn held talks with Speaker of the Malaysian House of Representatives Tan Sri Dato’ Johari bin Abdul on Friday, reaffirming both countries’ commitment to deepening parliamentary and strategic cooperation.
Speaker Johari welcomed the Vietnamese leader’s first official visit, noting its importance in advancing bilateral ties and supporting the Vietnam–Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Chairman Mẫn praised Malaysia’s economic progress and extended congratulations on the country’s recent Independence and Malaysia Day celebrations.
The two sides expressed satisfaction with the upgraded partnership announced during Party General Secretary Tô Lâm’s visit in 2024, which opened a new chapter in bilateral relations. They highlighted progress in political collaboration, parliamentary exchanges, and multilateral cooperation within ASEAN and global forums.
Looking ahead, both leaders agreed to accelerate the 2025–2030 Action Programme, strengthen economic and trade cooperation to achieve $18 billion in bilateral trade, and expand collaboration in areas such as halal industry, renewable energy, digital transformation, agriculture, tourism, and education. They also pledged to enhance maritime cooperation, address illegal fishing, and boost people-to-people exchanges, particularly among youth.
Parliamentary cooperation will be reinforced through more high-level exchanges, closer coordination in lawmaking, and stronger oversight of international agreements. Both countries committed to working together at AIPA, IPU, and APPF to safeguard peace, stability, and development in the region.
