In a strategic move to bolster its standing in the global artificial intelligence (AI) sector, Indonesia is leveraging its substantial reserves of critical minerals, such as nickel and copper, to enhance digital infrastructure. Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria emphasized that the processing of these minerals should not only support a sustainable and efficient digital framework but also create significant domestic value.
Nickel and copper are essential components in AI infrastructure, playing crucial roles in the production of batteries, electrical equipment, transmission networks, and systems that underpin data centers. Indonesia’s dominance in the nickel market is notable, as the country produces approximately 62% of the world’s mined nickel, positioning it as a key player in the global mineral supply chain.
Patria highlighted the necessity for responsible mineral processing practices, which include environmental safeguards, traceability, and sustainable labor practices, to fully capitalize on this strategic advantage. He also noted that the development of AI infrastructure requires more than mineral resources, pointing to the need for reliable electricity, fiber-optic networks, data centers, cooling systems, skilled labor, and effective governance structures.
Indonesia’s vision is to utilize its mineral wealth, burgeoning digital economy, and expanding technology workforce to establish itself as a regional hub for AI. This ambition aims to generate higher-value jobs and build domestic technological capabilities, thereby reinforcing its position in the AI industry.
